Professional Colleges and IT Industry

For industries of old economy, it was not possible to provide on-the-job training in the college itself. However, it can be different with IT. I find all the professional institutes today- both of engineering as well as management having huge number of computers along with all other infrastructure facility and library too. It can easily accept some tasks outsourced to them from IT and BPO enterprises. The institutes can separate and allocate some 50% of the facility for taking up real assignments from the companies.
After the completion of first or second semester, the best of the students or those that are needy can work in this section as regular apprentices. The faculty of the institutes can become the project leader or the company can employ some for coordinating and supervising its work for quality and delivery. The companies can break up the task into simpler ones that can easily be handled by the students. Other safety features too can be built-in the system.
The company should agree to pay certain stipend for the period to the students and some consultancy charges to the faculty involved. The process will be a win-win situation for all the stakeholders. The companies can get the work done at low cost. It can fill up its vacancy from the already trained students and then need not waste time on the training as it normally happens. The students can become financially independent and confident too to handle actual work. The faculty can get a feel of real situation and develop courses that are actually helpful for the industry. And the huge investment of the institutes in the computers and accessories can thus provide quick returns too. The companies can help the institutes to upgrade the equipment and facilities that will ultimately help them.
India today has hundreds for these institutes and hundreds of the IT and BPO companies too. Why should the institutes and the industry not collaborate to get the best out of the facilities and make the students better candidates for the industry? It will certainly reduce the training time for the new employees and add to the bottom line of the companies.
So let us create this win-win situation.
