Some Views on Reservations

The 14-days of agitation by Medical students and doctors still continues. During the meeting with the Prime Minister they demanded for an independent commission to assess the reservation system. I don’t think it was something that a democratic government can’t afford. Why the government is so hesitant to accept the demand?

As such, the views of National knowledge commission support the views of agitators. All but the two members of the 8- member commission gave their opinion against reservation.

The NKC Vice Chairman, Dr PM Bhargava, sent out a letter to the PM. His letter perhaps suggests the most acceptable and desirable steps. He suggests the government to set up nearly 4 lakh schools like Kendriya Vidyalayas in the next 10-15 years run by the panchayats to provide quality education. And in this period, reservation levels could be brought down from the proposed 50 per cent to zero. The government must provide equal opportunities to all sections of society, but it must also have an aim to achieve zero reservations within a stipulated period of time. Let all the political parties and everyone concerned come together and decide for the period (may be, another 10 0r 15 years) after that none will ask for any reservation under any pretext The government must do everything to undo the wrongs of the past, but it can’t and shouldn’t go on for ever, otherwise it is doing the same injustice as it happened in past only for people belonging to different castes. So the government must not be the party to repeat the same mistakes to some communities in this 21st century for that the whole society feel ashamed.

The most important priority for India today is to excel in knowledge sector and for that the merit must be the only criteria. Our human resource must compete with our competitors in the world. India and Indians must be the best.

Postgraduate education or research are specialized and must be pursued by only those who really willingly do that and are totally dedicated in seeking in-depth knowledge in specialized areas.

As such hardly some undergraduates of IITs go for Master degree or PH.D. IITians either go abroad for higher education or are picked up by MNCs or other reputed companies. Some even go to IIMs, as its brand is fetching better starting salaries. Some few even compete for administrative examinations. Most of the post-graduates come from other, mostly B- and C-grade engineering colleges. For post-graduate studies, reservation of any type must not been practiced. It will harm the nation’s competitiveness. Why should there be a reservation for MD, MS,and Ph.D that are a specialization only for brilliant deserving students? Merit is no way related to castes. However, the examination for admission may be such that it rightly picks up the meritorious ones. If the system has some drawbacks, that must be removed.

Let the nation appreciate this need of the hour for the nation’s shake.

Are Brahmins the Dalits of today?

At a time when the Congress government wants to raise the quota for Other Backward Classes to 49.5 per cent in private and public sectors, nobody talks about the plight of the upper castes. The public image of the Brahmins, for instance, is that of an affluent, pampered class. But is it so today? You may like to go thr’ this link, sent by OP Khanna, my friend.

We should keep faith in ourselves. This one is going to be a long battle which we have to win. let the force be with us and God give us the power and courage to fight this battle till the end. We cannot afford to lose this battle as this is the most important battle in the life of our times and history should not accuse of being cowards. It’s time to show courage to stick to the cause.

We need to motivate, encourage and persuade ourselves to the cause of equality and try to campaign actively, everyday, every night and every breath for this cause.

Withdrawal of the strike by doctors does not mean anything to the campaign. The campaign will continue till equality is restored in the society.

We need to keep the campaign alive and need to ensure that this fight continues for weeks and months till the government and Supreme Court make a case in our favor and abolish all forms of reservation.

The fight has to be persistent and continuous and non-violent and there must be no let down and it must gather momentum every day and fall on the government like a huge juggernauting snowball.

In a soceity where there is abundance creating quota does not adversely effect the legitmate receivers of benefit. In our country with its meager resources providing quota means harming the legitmate meritorious students.

principles and ideals which were on the forefront during independence times have taken back seat with the current parliamentarians. The current breed of parliamentarians work for benefit of themselves and their community. They are unconcerned about their acts adversely effecting huge sections of population. They reinforce their arguments with seemingly irrational arguments. The current media quality has deteriorated to such low standards that emotional and irrational logic are made to sound seeming and reasonable.

The need is to continue the agitation till the equality is resotred in democracy. Everyone must do their part in spreading the word and strenghtening the campaign.

We need to get ready for long drawn battle. We cannot lose this battle for the sake of our children.
