‘United For Justice’- An NDTV Initiative

The evening became very heavy with the programme. Barkha Dutta with the three representing the victims- Sabrina Lall, Chaman Lal Matoo, and Neelam Katara presented the helplessness of the judiciary and police system. Even Soli Sorabjee, Rani Jethmalani, and Kiran Bedi appeared to be sympathetic to the masters controlling the system. Judges can’t be proactive. Police can’t be expected to create evidence. Even the CBI can’t be relied. Legal luminaries defending the offenders can’t work for the middle class victims who can be match to the muscle and money power of the offenders. Even chief justices of High Court and Supreme Court have become deaf and dumb.

But for the outright initiatives of media to create public opinion against injustices done to the victims and support of commoners in the battle for peaceful battle for justice, the people of the country would have forgotten the cases like many similar ones.

I have one more expectation from the society in which the culprits are living and one of them at least is flourishing in his profession. Why can’t the society reject these people and outcaste them? In good old days, it used to happen this way. A family used to be outcaste, if someone even was found involved in theft and robbery. The penalty for rapes used to be real severe. All that used to happen without the court. How can a murderer practise as lawyer and getting clients? How can a politician get elected after so many similar or worse offences of the family members? Is not the society failing badly? Or the worse is not the society considering these culprits as heroes without thinking that our younger generation may take some bad habits from these cases?

Nitish, Jessica, and Priyadarshini- none of them are alive today. But the movement like ‘United for Justice’ may bring some change. Media must create the ‘Legal Fund For A Cause’ and appeal for donation. Why can’t some big corporate such as Infosys, Wipro, TCS, Tata and Ambani Group companies donate a respectable amount? People after seeing the programme must innovate some positive ways to eliminate the culprits and to assist the victims.
