Sonia Plays Her Trump Card Again

Yamuna had switched the TV waiting for her friend who was to join her to go to a kitty party, while I was taking rest. I overheard the news about the resignation of Sonia Gandhi as MP and chairperson of NAC (National Advisory Council). She again has done this to build her image. She wishes to prove that she is different from others. ‘Two months from the second anniversary of her renunciation of the Prime Minister’s post, Sonia Gandhi made a double “sacrifice” today to pull the government led by her party out of a hole it had dug for itself.’ Her statement to the press was pretty sentimental and appealing to get the maximum advantages in her favour.
Naturally, Congressmen are projecting her resignation as a supreme example of political purity and sacrifice for clearing any misunderstanding in the mind of people of India. The opposition is calling it as a face saving jerk-decision, and say she has become victim of her own conspiracy. But what I dislike rather hate is the media’s all news channels covering it live extensively with all the happenings in the minutest details making all sorts of people react on the news. Many feel Sonia’s action is as an exercise for helping the coming assembly elections.
Her sacrificial model of solving her impending embarrassments started with her sacrifice of giving up the position of the prime minister. Today’s development has come because of Jaya Bachchan’s episode. Recently Jaya Bachchan was expelled from Rajya Sabha, as she was accused of holding an office of profit. The Samajbadi Party- the ruling party in UP tried to pass a legislation expanding the positions that should not be considered the office of profit. But the governor a nominee of the UPA government at the center obstructed the legislation. EC expelled Jaya Bachchan after getting a consent from the President. Since then the opposition wanted Sonia Gandhi to resign or be expelled as she also holds position of profit.
After a report appeared in ‘Indian Express’ yesterday that the government is coming out with an ordinance expanding the list of positions that are not the positions of profit just to save Sonia Gandhi. And in hurry, the government decided to adjourn both the houses sine die against the convention of the budget session.
The opposition made a big hue and cry. They went to the President to request that he should not sign the ordinance if it comes to him. And now Sonia Gandhi has resigned. And all TV channels are beaming the minute-to-minute development with a lot of mirch and masala from 10 Janpath with chest beating congress crowds. Unfortunately, for the TV channels the nation has come to a stop because of this political development.
I don’t understand why these politicians hold two or more positions. For a country of a billion plus, should there be legislation that no one would hold two or more positions. Will it not solve some of our employment problem? However, before that, I am of strong opinion that any one above 65 years must not hold a public position. The younger generation must support and express this opinion.
I don’t know what will be the finishing act of dramatic move.
Is it a sacrifice and setting an example of morality or a very fragile personality that can’t stand a political onslaught?
P.S ‘Sonia Gandhi’s a smart politician’
