News: Nice to Ears and Eyes

I love hearing good news. Any good news about any Indian or India gives me an immense pleasure. And so I keep on searchimg for it. Here are some that I came across recently.

As I have seen the time when none of the big global players showed any interest in India, it excites me to know some one of the class setting up shop in India.

Premier Automobiles that is now out of car business or dead, had a technical collaboration with Nissan

The same Nissan is trying to come in India in big way. Nissan will start producing the Micras soon from its plant at Oragadam near Chennai. It will export more than half the plant’s production capacity of 200,000 vehicles, chiefly to Europe, West Asia and Africa. With strong local auto component manufacturers, the Micra’s local content will be around 85% at the end of the very first year of production. It shows how important India is today.

At present, the auto industry employs around 13 million people in direct and indirect jobs. By an estimate, the Indian automobile industry will create another five million direct and indirect jobs by 2012. According to the Automotive Mission Plan, the employment in auto sector is targeted to be around 25 million by 2016.

Westerners are now making many prophecies about India. According to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the research arm of London-based Economist magazine, ‘India will overtake China to become world’s fastest growing economy by 2018. Because of the favourable demography - higher percentage of working population - India’s growth rate will continue to remain on the higher side.’

Even Anglo-Australian mining giant Rio Tint predicts, India would outpace China in GDP growth within 15 years.

Further, according to a Columbia University report, India is among the world’s top three preferred investment destination, but equity caps limit the size of potential inflows.

But unless India provides the best of education and training facilities, I don’t think the advantage can produce the expected result.

And as I write this page, I find one ‘breaking news‘: Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal touched a new high on Thursday as she zoomed into the top-five of the world rankings at a career-best fifth spot following her stupendous show in the All England Badminton Championships earlier this month. So it is not only cricket.

There are many and many in the queue.
