FM Speaking- ” Innovation The Way Today”

At the India Economic Summit 2005 organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, Mr Chidambaram called for ‘Product leadership’ through innovative designing as a necassity for sustained industrial growth for the country.
I am reminded of an Indian who is making a spectacular product innovation in USA. His latest is a suspension system for passenger car industry. Dr. Amar Bose is 76 year-old now and going strong. Bose suspension system provides an answer to a long time engineering challenge giving a car good cornering capability without sacrificing a smooth ride. Bose was working to solve the puzzle why potholes seem harder to conquer than Mount Everest. Perhaps he would have had the early experiences of Indian roads famous for potholes and the Ambassador cars. He kept on his mission to solve the problem. He has done it with his new product. I read about in ‘The Time of India”.
Unlike spring- and -shock absorber systems, Bose’s suspension uses high voltage electrical coils and magnets to counter bumps in the road and prevent roll around corners. The Bose approach is recognized by many as a revolutionary way to ensure smooth ride, the high cost is the concern. With $ 5,000 additional cost per car, it may not be affordable but for some very high-end cars. I am sure Bose or someone else will find an answer to that too.
He is the same Bose famous for his contribution and commercial success of Bose audio system. As I wrote about him in my earlier entry, he is one of the Indians who have proved that Indians are equally at top in innovative products also.
Indians manufacturers particularly in auto component sectors, such as Sona Streering or Rane or TVS group must invest in R&D and tie up with our engineering institutes of excellence to come out with innovative product improvements to compete and excel the competition. Product innovations can only be the differentiator of tomorrow.
P.S. And this latest news from auto sector is inspiring.Tata plans car design in UK
