Valentine, Love and Ram

Yesterday Rakesh, my eldest son called me from US. And all his family members including Keshav who is of ten years and Vithi who is perhaps only seven, wished ‘Happy Valentine Day’ to both of us- the senior citizens now. When we were in US recently, we celebrated Halloween as well as Thanksgiving Day with all the fun and enjoyed it too.
Why should there be so much of heat because our youngsters are going American rather western in mannerism, or culture as some call it? It is entirely personal and family matters. No outsiders have any right to interfere in the personal affairs of individuals. And the police must stop using its definition of obscenity. If the irresponsible behavior of the police or so-called moral brigade continues, the society consisting of younger generation will revolt and that may even be violent one day. If young working girls are wearing western dresses and frequenting pubs, no one has any right to assault them. Only criminals can take such steps and criminals must be put behind the bar without any trial.
Love has been a divine thing. Over ages, the saints and learned people preached to learn loving not only human beings but everything that the nature has created all around us.
However, my today’s subject is love between young men and women and its opposition by some who called themselves Hindu and attach themselves with an army named after Rama. Why should they tarnish the name of Rama without understanding the depth of the cultural achievements of this ancient country?
I think the best narration of love has been written by Tulsidas in Ram Charitmanas. Ram sees Sita for the first time in the garden of King Janak. Ram and Lakshman have come for collecting flowers for their teacher Vishwamitra. Sita with her friends has come to offer prayer to Goddess Parvati. They don’t know each other. But they fall in love. They start wishing to be partner in life. The narration runs in pages. One must read the beautiful piece of the Bhakta Kavi Tulsidas.
I wish all those monkeys of Rama Sena (Mangalore) read Ramcharitmanas.
