What will we miss when in US?

We are in Noida only since 1998. I have lived in three places- Hind Motors, Salt lake and then here. After my retirement, I don’t have any professional attachment. Hardly, we socialise visiting friends and relatives. Even friends with residences near around Delhi expect me to contact them. They hardly take any initiative. For relatives also, the same is true. Some of them consider themselves too young in age to maintain a relation. Before the marriages of my sons, I used to think that the number of relations will expand. And the family will expand the network. However, it never happened. We are ourselves more at fault for all that. But I have learnt to live with this situation.

I shall certainly miss my visits to the vendors who sell magazines. I don’t get any good literary magazines particularly of Hindi. But some are still interesting. People nowadays, perhaps don’t read the literary magazines. I love to visit these vendors once a week at least. In USA, I shall not be able to see the magazines that I like to read physically. However, almost all of the magazines and news papers that I glance through here will be available on PC screen through internet. And it is interesting to note that I can go through the newspaper in day time and not at 3AM because of the time difference. But who can get me the “Ved Amrita” that even Yamuna reads with interest?

But I shall certainly be missing the heat of Bihar election through TV coverage. I know it is possible to get the cable connections there too, but I shall like to miss it for a change. As such I don’t have a fancy for the crooks’ faces. However, I love to watch some of the TV programmes such as “We, The People” of Barkha Datta, “The Big Fight” of RajDeep Sardesai on NDTV.
Yamuna- my wife will certainly miss Chaudhry- the cook, or the gardener who hardly does anything to see the plants grow properly or Hari- the washer man, and Prema- the maid. All these persons keep her busy and make her realise her importance.

We shall certainly be missing WAVE- the multiplex that we visit occasionally for a change. I drive only in Noida. I don’t know whether I shall be able to drive there or not. But I like sometimes to drive on good road- such as Noida-Greater Noida Expressway without any purpose. Yamuna will be missing her visits to ‘Angels”- the beauty parlour in Brahamputra complex. As she says it will be real costly there. So she took full three hours today, where as I got my haircut finished in 15 minutes and kept on waiting.

However, I am eagerly waiting for getting our passports back duly stamped with the visa so that we can leave for USA before the birth day of Svanik-my grand son. We have already missed the birthdays of Keshav and Alpana, which we would have loved to attend.

I am sure I shall be getting so new experiences over there that I shall stop missing Noida. For a learner, there can’t be dearth of opportunities and that also in a country which is the most advanced one.

But still “Janani Janambhumischa Swargadapi Gariyashi.”

It is good to read your thoughts. Before leaving for India, I had similar thoughts and I knew that I am not coming back in the near furute so I was more apprehensive. Certainly there would be many things that you would miss.

But think of the new things you will see. I really love the Public Libraries over here. Think of any good book that you want to read and chances are they are in the library. Santa Clara as well as San Jose has good public libraries. Both of them are connected by Public Transport. So you would be able to visit them by yourself.

The multi-cultural US is in itself a great thing. While I was in India my thoughts were that India and all its related things are the greatest in the world. But when you are exposed to the eclectic culture you realize every one is unique in its own way.

I can go on writing. But I will leave that to you and will read your thoughts when you are here :D
