Respected Man Mohan Singh Right at Back

I expected our respected Man Mohan Singh to make mark in G-20 meeting called by Bush to find the solutions for the recent financial catastrophe caused by US. As I am in US, I had kept on talking about him and the role he might play at the meeting with his experience and grasp of the subject for which he is respected in India. Unfortunately, I didn’t find any special mention of his contribution. Perhaps the other two members of the BRICs got more coverage. I quote below from two reports in New York Times.
When President Bush welcomed leaders from around the world to the White House on Friday night, for what may well be one of the last formal dinners of his administration, the topic was the fragile world economy and the lush menu. But the real story was in the seating chart. There, in the State Dining Room beneath a massive portrait of Abraham Lincoln, to Mr. Bush’s right was President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil, who has complained loudly that developing nations like his were being “infected with problems” not of their making. To Mr. Bush’s left sat a leader with a fat checkbook and the power that comes with it, President Hu Jintao of China.
Another idea is to expand the membership of the Financial Stability Forum, an influential group of finance ministers and central bankers from industrialized countries, to include emerging markets like Brazil and China.
Some leaders were simply eager to be heard. “Emerging market countries were not the cause of this crisis, but they are amongst its most affected victims,” the prime minister of India, Man Mohan Singh, said.
I felt bad. But again, it must be a reminder for all the country men that unless India performs and doesn’t shield against the excuses of being a democracy, India can’t get the place and respect we expect. every Indian in every field of activity will have to work hard and smart.
If any of the readers have found a better coverage in US media, I wish to stand corrected.

I think that the remark in the NY Times about Man Mohan Singh was made flippantly, without thinking, and apologize for it. Unfortunately even my beloved NY Times seems to be affected by the lack of funds that newspapers are suffering from, and is not always as good and thorough as it should be. I do notice that the photo chosen, interestingly, makes it appear almost as though Man Mohan Singh has a sort of halo around his head - he is standing directly in front of a set of circles drawn on the background wall. The graphics person at the NY Times must have noticed this.
